Check out reactions and comments from Nigerians especially
on the micro-blogging site, Twitter. On the sack of Charles Uwakwe, the ex-registrar of the
National Examination Council (NECO) by FG.
Uwakwe was one of the 5 top NECO staff members that were
dismissed by President Buhari on May 20,
2020. The development was greeted with remarks from Nigerians most of which
supported the Federal Government move to sanitise the nation's education
system. Many Nigerians trust that it is time for corruption in all sectors of
the country to be history and as such gave their full consent to the sack of
the NECO boss.
Other persons of similar thinking said that there was sanity
in the education system until some bad eggs were brought into the system making
things practically unbearable for everyone.
Tony4Real said on Twitter: "I am very sad by the
actions of such people, they enjoyed when Nigeria was good, good jobs, free
education, and they destroyed it."
However, another section of social media commentators has
called for a tangible reason why the appointment of Uwakwe was terminated by
the president. The question was specifically raised by a Twitter subscriber,
#ORIJINAdre, who asked: "Any tangible reason for the termination?"
Meanwhile, eduregime.blogspot.com reported that President
Buhari has cut-off the appointment of Uwakwe and four other management staff
for various offenses. Their removal comes after a panel investigating
allegations of misconduct against them while they were on suspension
recommended they be removed. According to the newspaper, a May 11 letter signed
by the permanent secretary Sonny Echono said Uwakwe was accused of violating
the public procurement act.
A statement from Azeez Sani, the council’s head of
information and public relations, said
the “President in exercise of his powers, has approved your removal as
Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of National Examinations Council with effect
from the date of your suspension from duty”. He was directed to hand over all
government properties in his custody to the Acting Registrar of the Council.
Eduregime.blogspot.com also compile that the affected
officers are: Bamidele Olure, Acting Director (Finance and Accounts), Shina
Adetona, Head of Procurement Division, Tayo Odukoya, Deputy Director and Barr.
Babatunde Aina, Head of Legal/Board matters. Olure was dismissed for financial
impropriety and not qualified to head the Finance and Accounts Department while
Adetona was dismissed for acts tantamount to fraudulent practices, sabotage and
suppression of official records. Odukoya was dismissed for acts of serious
misconduct.
